Gautam Hegde picks TV actors who would click in a desi version of the popular sitcom, Friends.

So no one told you life was gonna be this way. But well, life could change, what with rumours that Colors could be remaking the NBC cult show FRIENDS which ran for a decade and still has us in splits.

Today, we bring to you a dream cast for the show — thought, fought and sought about over many discussions and arguments.

The main cast
As we all know the show revolves around Central Perk and six eccentric characters — Monica Geller (Courtney Cox Arquette),

Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Joey Tribbiani (Matt le Blanc), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer).. and it needs to be a kickass Indian counterpart cast for these bunch of d.o.s.t.s. So here goes:

RACHEL GREEN: Hot and sassy, a bitch with a heart. Someone who when locked out thinks she would have left the gas stove on, only to be told that she hasn’t cooked since nine years!

We thought of Shveta Salve for this part. Because most men in the TV industry think she is hot (Shweta Tiwari comes a close
second but is too old).. which she is and we haven’t seen her burn the telly belly since a long time. Would be good to see her jhalak as Ms Green then..

PHOEBE BUFFAY: Phoebe is kinky, strongly vegan, cleans auras, can be unexpectedly smart and obviously dumb. But she is all heart and how! Need a mad, mad girl for this part.

Either Priya Badlani or Mona Wasu would fit in well. They’ve both dabbled with fun in Jab Love Hua and Millee respectively.
But knowing Badlani’s penchant for dressing well, hope she doesn’t mind wearing the hippie attire that Buffay is famous for. As for Wasu, she was dressed as a maid in her maiden show, so no probs there. Smelly cat, anyone?

MONICA GELLER: Control freak, hot brunette who loves cooking, detested by her mother — how about Anita Hassnandani? She has done two shows for Colors —Fear Factor and Dancing Queen which have erased Kyunki Anita bhi kabhi Kavyanjali thi from the viewers’ mind.

He’s the quintessential man-child. He would cry watching Titanic, not understand jokes at once, would flirt outrageously and eat like there is no kal, aaj aur kal. Only Gaurav Khanna comes to mind. The actor has been dead and buried in Jeevan Saathi. Anyway, he has a habit of doing two shows at any given point of time. We did think of Karan Singh Grover but we have considered him for another part in another show which we will tell you..

Okay these two were tough because Ross and Chandler have had vast character graphs. Ross started as a romantic nobody to becoming a slapstick loser to lover boy again. Divorced thrice, petty about stuff, greedy enough to steal free shampoos and toilet rolls at hotels, we would like Manish Paul to play the paleontologist.

We aren’t sure whether viewers would take to Shveta Salve and him as a couple. But that would be fun right? And it would even look as if she DID ignore him when they were young and geeky.

Sanjit Bedi was also another choice but

Jaane Kya Baat huyi

. Ranvir Shorey would have been purrrfect but he is a big man today.

Won’t do TV no?

Unless Rahul Khanna (who looks a bit like David Schwimmer) would consider TV.. hmm! For Chandler, we need a FUNNY guy — like Cyrus but neither Broacha, not Sahukar could seem the romantic type opposite Hassnandani. Eijaz Khan would be too obvious and we think he is appealing to the third umpire and moviegoers about Meerabai being out these days.

Hussein Kuwajerwala? But he is also doing a film now. Vishal Singh who has done comedy from Dekh Bhai Dekh to Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na could work. Also he puts on weight and then loses it again, much like Matthew Perry who played Chandler in the original.

For the senior Gellers from F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Monica and Ross’ parents we thought Ratna Pathak Shah and Satish Shah would be great. Their couple chemistry from Filmy Chakkar to Sarabhai vs Sarabhai has been amazing. Ms Shah would cut her daughter with her high society Maya glare and Mr Shah could play the I-was-wearing-that-jacket-when-we-conceived-Monica part well!
For Gunther, the coffeehouse guy who has a secret crush on Rachel, we thought Ashwin Mushran would be APT.

Ram Kapoor would be perfect for Richard, the hot-eye-doctor-older-guy that Monica falls for.

Estelle, Joey’s agent could be played by Sarita Joshi or her equally talented daughter Ketki Dave.

Mitika Sharma or Monaz Mewawala could play Janice, Chandler’s nasal girlfriend.

Sudeep Sahir could play Mike, the guy who Phoebe finally marries. It would be good fun watch him and Priya Badlani recreate their Jab Love Hua chemistry.

Anchal Dwivedi could play Chandler’s hot mum who kisses Ross. Deepak Qazir could play the weird Mr Heckles.

Long ago, ZEE had made Hello Friends, a direct rip-off of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. The fountain sequence was shot at Essel World. It featured Cyrus Broacha as Chandler, Simone Singh as Monica, Aparna Tilak as Rachel, Nikhil Chinappa as Ross Maria Goretti as Phoebe and Kunal Vijaykar as Gunther. The show didn’t run long, thankfully.
