Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma’s co-star, Upasana Singh opens up about the downfall of their show, says it was not intentional on anyone’s part.

Actor Upasana Singh’s character of Pinky Bua on comedian actor Kapil Sharma’s show Comedy Nights With Kapil had become an instant hit with the TV audience. However, the show’s fate went downhill, after it first changed its host channel and then went off air, following a small run on the new channel.

Asked about what went wrong, Upasana says, “Sometimes, certain decisions go wrong. Things went wrong when we were with the first channel. Kapil [host of the show that aired over the weekend] decided that he wanted to do a film [Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon; 2015]. He dropped Saturday’s shoot and another show replaced it. Then issues started growing and our show faced a lot of problems. The show ended there.”

According to Upasana, things were not the same when the show moved to a different channel. “Now, we couldn’t play the same characters, and the audience is always attached to the characters [that they’ve seen for so long]. So, the show didn’t see similar popularity.”

Sometime during the show’s stint on the new channel, Kapil got into a mid-flight brawl with co-star Sunil Grover [popular for his character Gutthi], who later quit the show, and the TRPs started dropping. Adding to the downfall was constant cancellation of shoots from Kapil’s end.

“Kapil’s first film didn’t work, but he wanted something better [after that] and that’s the case with every actor. A lot of times, something goes wrong and it is not intentional on anyone’s part,” says Upasana, who will “always support Kapil, no matter what” the situation is. “Kapil is a very emotional man. The show didn’t do well; his films didn’t do well. There was so much being written about him. He was already in depression... Kapil has reached here with a lot of hard work. He will definitely come back and work. I’ll always be with him.”

Are there any discussions of reviving the show? “A lot of people are trying. If it happens and if the same team comes back, the show will be back to being number one,” she signs off on an optimistic note.
