Skewed sex-ratio became a major issue of concern for the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the first time, as figures for the year 2011 dwindled down to 859 girls per 1000 boys as compared to 2001 census. The 2001 data showed there were 941 girls per 1000 boys in the age group of 0-6 years old category. Farooq Ahmad Faktoo, chief census officer of Jammu and Kashmir, blamed unauthorised pre-natal sex-determination and dowry as the major reasons for the current state of affairs.
