Social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram could face bans in India if they do not comply with new Information Technology rules, set to come into effect from May 26. The new regulations require such companies to implement decisions like appointing chief compliance officers, nodal contact persons, and resident grievance officers. If companies fail to comply, they could lose their intermediary status which protects them from liability with regard to third-party information and data on their platforms.
