Facebook sued in EU over privacy concerns regarding data sent to US

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) began hearing a petition filed by a privacy activist, Max Schrems against Facebook, the social media giant. The case pertains to transfer of data from the European Union to the United States of America. Firms like Facebook use standard contractual clauses to transfer data after an earlier case filed by Schrems led to striking down of a widely used system for trans-Atlantic data flow. The ECJ will now adjudge whether the contractual clauses uphold the stringent privacy laws of the EU by ensuring security of data when it goes to the US.
