Hotline, ‘gender champions’ tackle violence against girls in Kenya
Drought means young girls walk long distances for water and become an easy target for predators. There have been 10 cases of rape this year alone but many go unreported. Sophie, the oldest activist in Wajir says in her community if a girl is raped, an animal is offered in exchange to settle matters. But, now a group of men and women are fighting back with a gender support desk and hotline. The gender champions denounce violence on a local radio station and are determined to fight till their place is free of gender-based violence.
