Massive escalation between the UK and Iran over the execution of British-Iranian national. Tehran executed its top former defence official, Alireza Akbari, for snooping. Akbari was hanged on charges of spying for UK intelligence (MI6). He was hanged after being convicted of "corruption on earth and harming Iran’s internal and external security by passing on intelligence." Fuming at Iran, UK PM Rishi Sunak called the "barbaric regime's" action "callous and cowardly." On the other hand, the UK's defence secretary, James Cleverly, has vowed retaliation.
