Watch | Oldest orangutan turns 60 in Perth Zoo
An orangutan at Perth Zoo has been named the world’s oldest Sumatran orangutan in captivity by the Guinness Book of World Records, as she celebrated her 60th birthday October 27. Female orangutans in the wild do not generally live past 50 years. Puan was gifted to the zoo in 1968 by the Sultan of Johor. Perth Zoo is one of the top breeders of orangutans. Puan was the start of its breeding programme, and has since become the matriarch of the colony having 11 children, multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
