Canada Election Results 2025 Highlights: Mark Carney leads Liberals to an impressive victory

Polls have closed in most of Canada now, CBS poll tracker reported. Results are expected to start emerging soon from over 200 ridings in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

According to CBC's latest projections, initial projections showed an early lead for the Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Liberals won 20 seats and are leading in 24 others.

Meanwhile, Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives have won 7 seats and are leading in 32 others.

The Elections Canada website - the official website of the Canada election authority has been restored. It was down for the past 1 hour due to reported technical difficulties.

Some users were unable to access the website, which gives voters the ability to look for information about their riding, or constituency, by postal code.

According to the Canadian public broadcaster CBC, the Liberals are so far projected to win 19 seats while the Conservatives are so far projected to win six seats.

Voters in the western part of the country are still casting their ballots, and millions of votes remain to be counted.

Like the UK and unlike India, Canada has a "first-past-the-post" electoral system. This means that the candidate who gets the most votes in each electoral district, or riding, wins that seat and becomes an MP.

The share of votes doesn't have to be a majority, it just has to be one more vote than the runner-up candidate.

According to CBC's tracker, the Liberals were polling at nearly 43 per cent, while the Conservatives trailed closely at just over 39 per cent. The New Democratic Party (NDP) was in third with about 9 per cent support, followed by the Bloc Quebecois at 6 per cent.

The polls have officially closed in Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Al Jazeera reported.

Results from the province are expected shortly, providing the first glimpse into how the race is shaping up.

In early counting, the Liberals were leading in 21 of Atlantic Canada's 32 districts, which are also called seats, followed by the Conservatives with 11. The Liberals held 23 seats before the election.

According to Canada's public broadcaster CBC, the first projection of the evening went to the Liberals. Philip Earle is projected to hold his riding in Labrador.
