Pakistan’s state-run TV channel on Wednesday ended its “ban” on coverage of opposition politicians, with its Twitter feed giving equal prominence to Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) chief Shahbaz Sharif and Sindh chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

“All political parties and their leaders are getting coverage on PTV #EidAladha activities of opposition leaders also covered by PTV. Political censorship lifted from @PTVNewsOfficial & @RadioPakistan,” Pakistan Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said in a tweet.

To journalist Zarrar Khuhro, who tweeted: “Am i having an LSD flashback or is @PTVNewsOfficial actually giving news about opposition politicians??”, he responded: “Next is PTV English ll need your n other friends input to make it a Regional player Inshallah.”

Chaudhry, who is also the information secretary of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, had Tuesday announced the Imran Khan government issued directives for complete editorial independence of state media, adding that drastic changes will be visible in the Information Department in the next three months.

“As per vision of @ImranKhanPTI Ended political censorship on PTV, clear instructions issued for a complete editorial independence on PTV and Radio Pakistan, drastic changes [will] be visible in Information Dept in coming 3 months Inshallah,” he posted on Twitter.
