UK: 6 held for kidnap, murder of Indian-origin jeweller

Six people have been arrested following the discovery last weekof the body of a prominent jeweller in the east Midlands city of Leicester, which has a large population of Indian-origin and sustains a thriving jewellery industry.
The body of Ramniklal Jogiya, 74, was found on January 25, some distance from his jewellery shop in the arterial Belgrave Road, also known as the “Golden Mile” due to the large number of gold and jewellery shops and branches of Indian banks.
Leicestershire police said on Wednesday that a sixth person, aged 20, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Jogiya. Two other men, aged 18 and 22 and arrested on Monday, remained in police custody. Arrested personsare not named until charged.
Three persons charged with Jogiya’s kidnap and robbery were identified as Thomas Jervis, 23, Charles Frances Mcauley, 20, and Callan Reeve, 19. They were remanded to appear at Leicester crown court on February 28.
Jogiya’s family issued a statement, urging people to come forward with information. He was reported missing by his family when he failed to return home from his jewellery shop. Jogiya, the father of three sons, lived in Belgrave area.
The statement said: “Ramniklal was a loyal, gentle man who was passionate about his family. He was a doting husband, father, grandad, brother and uncle, who loved nothing more than spending time with his family, whether it be sharing food, watching cricket or catching up with favourite Asian TV serials with his wife.
“Our family has been left devastated. Our close knit family has lost a great man. We keep reliving what happened to him and we’re deeply saddened and hurt. If you know what happened to Ramniklal we would urge you contact the police. Nothing can bring him back but the people responsible need to be caught.”
