Trader Joe's spokesman Nakia Rohde told The LA Times that the well-known grocery business intends to open at least 20 outlets this year, two of which have already opened.

Two among twenty

The grocery chain intends to open at least 20 sites this year, two of which have already opened, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The California openings are part of a larger rollout that includes new locations across several states, such as Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Utah.

The company has already opened stores in New York and Connecticut earlier this year and continues to add locations to its “coming soon” list.

Less than a year ago, Trader Joe's announced five additional locations in California. December saw the opening of a store in Costa Mesa, while June saw the opening of another in Los Angeles.

The grocery store launched eleven new sites in the final two months of 2025.

This late-year spike was a component of a broader 2025 expansion that saw the opening of 43 new locations across the country.

Trader Joe’s operates over 600 stores nationwide and has built a loyal customer base through its focus on private-label products, competitive pricing, and a curated shopping experience.

The store has become a destination in and of itself thanks to its unique exclusives and affordable prices. And the corporation is relying on that kind of devotion as long as supermarket costs stay persistently high.

Store battles rising inflation and a hike in gas prices

The company's quick changes coincide with grocery retailers' struggle against growing inflation, which is made more difficult by the increase in gas prices as the US-Iran war escalates.

According to its website, Trader Joe's is privately held and owned by families who also own a portion of Aldi, a discount grocery chain.

As Trader Joe's aims multiple openings across the country, Aldi also plans to add 180 U.S. stores in 2026. The grocery outlet, however, announced in March that it is closing 36 underperforming stores, including nine in California.
