Twelve bodies were recovered on Friday from a supermarket in central Nairobi which was completely destroyed by fire two days earlier, Kenya Red Cross official Davis Okoko said.

He told reporters at the scene that at least 30 other people have been reported missing in Nairobi since the blaze and said the search for more bodies would continue.

Investigators are trying to establish the cause of the fire but witnesses said the high number of casualties may have been caused by gas canister blasts and the fact that some exits were allegedly blocked to prevent looting.
