At least 31 Tamil Tigers and five soldiers were killed in fierce clashes in Sri Lanka's embattled northern region, officials said in Colombo on Thursday.

Army soldiers found five bodies of female LTTE cadres along with five T-56 rifles after hours-long clashes at Periyamadhu area in Vavuniya on Wednesday, the defence ministry said.

While one soldier was killed, another was reported missing in the incident, it said.

In another incident, four LTTE rebels and one soldier were killed in Periyamadhu area, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.

In a similar incident at Palamodai in Vavuniya-Mannar border, troops attacked two fortified LTTE bunkers last evening.

Ground sources have confirmed that six LTTE cadres were killed in the incident, the ministry said.

Separately, a sniper deployed in the Palampiddi area in Mannar claimed to have shot dead one LTTE rebel this morning.

In another incident, one soldier lost his life during clashes in Muhamalai in Jaffna peninsula yesterday, the MCNS said.
