At least five persons were killed in a US drone attack in the lawless north Waziristan tribal region in northwest Pakistan today, official sources said.

The drone fired five missiles at targets near Miranshah, the main town in north Waziristan Agency.

A veterinary hospital was also hit by a missile, sources said. The identity of the dead could not immediately be ascertained.

The US has stepped up drone attacks in north Waziristan since a suicide bomber linked to the Pakistani Taliban killed seven CIA operatives in neighbouring Khost province of Afghanistan in December.
