The quake struck at 3:15 am (1915 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 38 kilometres (24 miles), about 126 kilometres from Ternate city on Halmahera island, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck far from land, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami warning was issued.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where tectonic plates collide.
