7 critically injured in Nepal plane crash

Seven persons including two Japanese tourists have been critically injured when the twin otter aircraft carrying them crashed near the airport at Jomsom in western Nepal today morning.

Seven persons including two Japanese tourists have been critically injured when the twin otter aircraft carrying them crashed near the airport at Jomsom in western Nepal on Thursday morning.

The accident comes a year after another crash in Jomsom when an aircraft crashed into a hill near the airport killing 15 persons on board including 13 Indian tourists.

Thursday’s accident took place 20 minutes after the small aircraft belonging to Nepal Airlines carrying eight Japanese tourists, 11 Nepalis and three crew members took off from Pokhara airport.

Officials at Kathmandu said the aircraft crashed on the banks of the Kaligandaki River close to the airstrip after the pilots lost control and the plane skidded while trying to land.

Seven of the victims who sustained critical injuries including the two pilots, the air-hostess and two Japanese tourists have been flown to Pokhara by another aircraft for treatment.

“The exact cause of the accident will be ascertained after investigations. But preliminary reports suggest windy conditions at the airport could have played a part,” Rishikesh Sharma, a senior official at Tribhuwan International Airport here told journalists.
