"It is not a major problem as such, the planes have been diverted to various destinations because there is a plane that slid on the runway," said Joseph Ngisa, police chief of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

"There were no injuries at all, everyone was evacuated to safety."

Planes were diverted to neighbouring Uganda as well as to Kenya's port city of Mombasa.

"Operations will resume to normal shortly. People should not panic," Ngisa said, adding that the troubled aircraft was from Egypt Air.
