At least 100 killed in Congo train accident

At least 100 people are killed following the derailment of a train in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Information Minister Toussaint Tshilombo said.

At least 100 people were killed following the derailment of a train in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Information Minister Toussaint Tshilombo said.

"According to information in our possession, at least 100 passengers died and dozens more were injured after the derailment of a goods train Wednesday night, close to Lweme river," Tshilombo said.

The accident site is about 170 km to the north of Kananga region in western Kasai province.

Previous figures issued by the United Nations Mission in DRC (MONUC) had indicated that 68 people died and 120 others were "seriously injured".
