An official in Mosul, who declined to be named, said the policemen were killed when a truck primed with explosives blew up as they were searching it.

A civilian was injured in the blast, he said.

In the second attack, an army captain was killed by a roadside bomb that targetted his patrol in the mainly Kurdish city of Khanaqin, according to a local security official.
