The tragic incident occurred when the tour bus was carrying teachers from Mae Sai District in Thailand's northern Chiang Rai Province to Nan. The bus then plunged into the over-100-metre-deep Doi Ji Cliff. Rescue operations have been continuing with difficulties.

The victims were reportedly teachers from Baan Rai Khao Thep Kanchana Upatham School who were on a farewell trip with a group of their colleagues who had transferred to work in Nan.
