The official Xinhua News Agency says the jet with a crew of two was flying over a tactical training base in the city of Taonan in Jilin province when it crashed on Sunday morning.

The report says it is not known whether the crew escaped. Military authorities are investigating.

Calls to the press department of China's defense ministry rang unanswered. A duty officer with the Taonan city government said she was unclear about the situation.
