A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted northwest Pakistan on Friday but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, an official said.

Tremors were felt in the northwestern cities of Peshawar and Chitral and the capital Islamabad at 10:58 am (0458 GMT), a seismological department official told AFP.

The earthquake's epicentre was located about 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of Peshawar in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, he said.

A devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in northwest Pakistan and Kashmir killed some 74,000 people and displaced 3.5 million in October 2005.
