Fifty-three killed in Bangla landslides

At least 53 people, including 12 children, were killed and several others feared dead in a series of landslides in southeastern Chittagong region of Bangladesh as torrential rains paralysed life in most parts of the country.

At least 53 people, including 12 children, were killed and several others feared dead in a series of landslides in southeastern Chittagong region of Bangladesh as torrential rains paralysed life in most parts of the country.

All the deaths have been reported from the hilly port city of Chittagong, officials said on Monday.

While 23 deaths were reported from Lebubagan area near the Chittagong campus, seven bodies have so far been recovered from university, officials said.

Mudslides killed others in Lalkhund bazar, Khulshi, Bahartuli and Hathazari areas of the city.

Army bulldozers have been called to join the fire service rescuers and hundreds of volunteers to remove tonnes of sludge in search of more bodies.

Heavy monsoon rains have hit the country over the weekend.
