Accompanied by senior party leaders, 55-year-old Gilani went to the Parliament House ahead of the 2 pm (local time) deadline for filing nominations.

Apart from Gilani, former Punjab province Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi, a candidate of pro-Musharraf PML-Q party, filed his nomination for the election to the top post.

The decision to nominate Elahi was taken after Muttahida Qaumi Movement decided to withdraw party leader Farooq Sattar as its joint candidate with PML-Q for the post of prime minister, PML (Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said on Sunday.

The nomination papers will be scrutinised later in the day by the National Assembly Secretariat.

The election of Gilani in National Assembly on Monday is a certainty given the majority the incoming PPP-PML(N) coalition has in the lower house of Parliament. The new Prime Minister will be sworn-in on Tuesday.
