The Merchant Marine Ministry said the Alpha 1 vessel sank today after traveling from the nearby port of Piraeus.

Divers later found the body of the ship's 48-year-old captain, according to ministry officials, who said the cause of the sinking not immediately clear.

The ship was carrying 1,800 metric tonnes of heavy fuel oil, and a floating barrier was set up around the site of the sinking to prevent pollution if an oil spill occurred.
