The official said on Wednesday that Col Abdel-Moneim al-Dallal was shot dead in front of his house late on Tuesday by unidentified assailants.

Meanwhile, an explosive device blew up a school used as a polling centre as the same city. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press.

Violence has rocked Libya over the past two years even after the end of the eight-month civil war that toppled and killed longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
