The General Medical Council (GMC) found a string of charges proved against Dr Ravi Manikonda after a 20-day disciplinary hearing in Manchester.

A consultant paediatrician, he now needs to retrain and abide by a list of 13 conditions for 18 months.

His failings included not diagnosing a painful bowel condition and not properly investigating a child who had suffered fits. Manikonda qualified from Berhampur University in 1988.

Panel chairman Andrew Reid told Dr Manikonda he would have to retrain "in view of the serious nature of the panel's findings".

The conditions include being regularly monitored and audited by a supervisor as well as retraining. However, the panel heard from Dr Manikonda's colleagues who described him as an "intelligent and capable colleague" who worked to "high professional standard".

The panel also noted there had been no further incidents.
