Mark Regev says Olmert "sees importance in the continuation of the dialogue" with Syria. Negotiators have held four rounds of indirect talks through Turkish mediators, but contacts have been suspended for months because of political upheaval in Israel. Israeli media reported Friday that Olmert planned to ask Turkey next week to arrange another round of talks. Regev did not deny the reports but would not comment further.

Olmert announced he was stepping down because of corruption charges, but remains a caretaker leader until after national elections on Feb. 10.

Olmert's political opponents say he should freeze negotiations as his days in office are numbered.
