They said they recovered the body of a man from a tunnel in the south of the coastal territory and the body of a second man remained under rubble. The Israeli army said in a statement it had carried out air strikes against two tunnels dug by Palestinian militants in the southern Gaza Strip. Another air strike targeted a weapons storage building in northern Gaza.

The army said it carried out the air strikes in response to mortar bombs fired towards Israel on Thursday. Palestinians dug a network of tunnels under the Gaza Strip's border with neighbouring Egypt to skirt an Israeli blockade aimed at punishing the territory's Hamas Islamist rulers.

Facing international criticism over the death of nine pro-Palestinian activists in a May 31 commando raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, Israel said this month it was easing its blockade to allow more goods into the enclave.
