Madagascan mayor appeals for calm

The outspoken mayor at the centre of serious unrest on Madagascar issued a radio appeal for "calm" Monday night after a protester was shot dead and rioting followed anti-government protests.

The outspoken mayor at the centre of serious unrest on Madagascar issued a radio appeal for "calm" Monday night after a protester was shot dead and rioting followed anti-government protests.

"I call for calm," Antananarivo Mayor Andry Rajoelina said on private station Radio Antsiva.

He indicated that his side had entered talks with the government of President Marc Ravalomanana, saying that "a discussion is underway."
