A law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Monday that Madoff had left a New York lockup on his way to a North Carolina facility.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss prisoner transfers. The 71-year-old Madoff was sentenced last month to a 150-year sentence after admitting he bilked thousands of investors out of billions of dollars in a massive Ponzi scheme.
