The quake was felt in the resort city of Acapulco about 64 km west of San Marcos, but no significant damage was reported.

"It was strong and we have just had an emergency. It was a gas leak at a home, but nothing further," a dispatcher at an Acapulco fire station said.

"We don't have any damage reports so far," said Ricardo Resendiz, a dispatcher with civil protection in Acapulco.

The quake, which struck at 11.07 GMT, was 20 km deep, the USGS said.
