Magnitude 6.9 quake off Vanuatu, no tsunami threat

6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off Vanuatu today, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no threat of a destructive tsunami.

6.9 magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off Vanuatu on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no threat of a destructive tsunami.

The quake, which hit at 1334 GMT, was at a shallow 6.3 miles (10 km) depth, and was centered 76 miles (122 km) west of Port-Vila, Vanuatu, the USGS said.

Based on historical data, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, there was no threat of a widespread destructive tsunami.
