More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from villages in Johor, Malaysia, after heavy rain caused flooding in five districts, police said on Monday.

The evacuees are being housed in 12 relief centres in the affected region.

Chief Inspector Hasani Hussin said that the situation was stable though it was still raining heavily in the region.

Heavy rain in December caused the evacuation of over 20,000 people across five states in northern Malaysia.
