Maldives to hold presidential poll on Oct 4

The Maldives will hold its first-ever multiparty presidential poll on Oct 4 pending parliamentary approval, the Indian Ocean archipelago nation's electoral commission said on Monday.

The Maldives will hold its first-ever multiparty presidential poll on Oct. 4 pending parliamentary approval, the Indian Ocean archipelago nation's electoral commission said on Monday.

"If they complete the supreme court and bill on presidential elections this week, on Oct. 4 we will have the elections," Elections Commissioner Mohamed Ibrahim told a press conference. The bills, to finalise reform of the supreme court and set out the election procedure, are widely expected to pass this week.
