A man was shot and wounded on the campus at prestigious Harvard University, police said.

The man was shot outside Kirkland House, an undergraduate residence on Monday, the public relations office for the renowned university in Cambridge, Massachusetts said.

Police Sergeant James DeFrancesco told AFP the victim was "taken to a nearby hospital ... In stable condition."

There was no immediate information about the identity of the victim or of the shooter.

According to a report in the campus newspaper, The Crimson, the victim was found bleeding, but conscious. He was reported to be young, but there was no information indicating whether he was a student or not.
