Moderate 5.9 quake strikes near Fiji
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Fiji region today, the US Geological Survey said, although there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warning was in effect.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Fiji region on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, although there were no reports of damage and no tsunami warning was in effect.
The undersea quake struck at a shallow depth of 10.2 kms around 190 kms southwest of the South Pacific islands of Wallis and Futuna at just after 4:00 am (local time), the USGS statement said.
There was no warning in effect on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre website.
The region lies in the "Pacific ring of fire", a highly active earthquake and volcanic zone that regularly experiences quakes.
