The US Geological Survey said the 5.9-magnitude quake struck at 0259 IST around 310 km southwest of the town of Medan on Sumatra.

It struck at a depth of 35 kilometres.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
