The quake struck at 8:56 am (2356 GMT yesterday), 231 kilometres (144 miles) west of Jayapura at a depth of 15 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "ring of fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
