The White House isn't disclosing any details but says Snowden was among the topics the leaders discussed by phone on Friday.

Security relations and counterterrorism preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, were also discussed.

The call comes the same day Snowden emerged from weeks of hiding in Moscow's airport and said he wants asylum in Russia.

Snowden said he's willing to meet Putin's condition that he stop leaking secrets if it means Russia would give him shelter that could eventually help him get to Latin America.

The White House says Russia gave Snowden a "propaganda platform" by letting him meet with human rights activists.
