Chicago based Smith, owner of the popular 'Table Fifty-Two' restaurant here, is heading to India in February to cook vegetarian food for the Dalai Lama and spend some time cooking for 2,000 monks, a report in the Chicago SunTimes said.

During his visit to the city in February this year, Obama had taken his wife Michelle to Table Fifty-Two for a Valentine's Day Dinner. Smith is also Winfrey's former chef.

The SunTimes report said it took Smith "six months to clear security" and be allowed to cook for the Dalai Lama. Smith has for long harboured a desire to cook for the Tibetan spiritual leader.

"I have always admired His Holiness and the Tibetan people and their plight to preserve their culture and religion as the modern world presses against them to change," Smith had said.

Smith is also scheduled to head to Winfrey's South African Leadership Academy for Girls in November to teach cooking and eventually hopes to cook in treacherous places, the report added.
