Gilani was scheduled to leave for the Asia meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, which is starting Tuesday.
The prime minister cancelled his trip in the wake of the situation emerging from the terrorist strikes in Mumbai, his press secretary, Zahid Bashir, said.
The Mumbai attacks, which killed at least 183 people, have triggered tensions between the two South Asian countries, with India suspecting the Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Toiba group of carrying out the attacks.
