Peru reports first swine flu case

A Peruvian woman who arrived here Saturday from New York on a commercial flight has been confirmed as Peru's first swine flu case, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte announced Thursday.

A Peruvian woman who arrived here Saturday from New York on a commercial flight has been confirmed as Peru's first swine flu case, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte announced Thursday.

The woman's symptoms manifested two days after her arrival in Peru, and tests subsequently confirmed that they were caused by the swine flu virus, Ugarte said.

"The progress of the 27-year-old patient is good and she is currently recovering," he said, adding that authorities were taking steps to be able to rule out the virus's presence among her family members.
