Quake rocks southern New Zealand

New Zealand government research body GNS Science said the undersea quake hit at 11:34 am (0500 IST) some 430 kilometres southwest of the southern city of Invercargill.

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale struck southern New Zealand today, officials said.

New Zealand government research body GNS Science said the undersea quake hit at 11:34 am (0500 IST) some 430 kilometres southwest of the southern city of Invercargill.

The quake was 10 metres deep, according to the US Geological Survey.

The tremblor was felt in Queenstown, and was likely felt throughout the southern end of the South Island, the New Zealand Press Association reported.
