Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov warned Wednesday that the US-led war in Iraq was doomed to fail.

Ivanov said US-led attempts to overthrow the regime of a sovereign state were "illegal and doomed to failure".

"This is not about democratizing Iraq, since it's about the total destruction of the country," he said, quoted by Interfax news agency.

"The United States and Great Britain do not even know themselves what principles are at stake here. First they talked about disarming Iraq, then regime change and now they are talking about democratizing the country," he added.

Russia has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the US-led war to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and has said it would appeal to the United Nations to rule on the war's legality.

"Russia asked the United States several times to provide explanations into the legal basis of this operation, but received no response," Ivanov added.
