Rescuers found the bodies of the victims on Saturday after the accident a day earlier in the Dahuangshan mine, in Xinjiang region in the far west of the country, the Xinhua news agency said.

Another 81 miners working at the time escaped, the report said.

Official figures show that more than 3,200 workers died in collieries last year in China, but independent observers say the actual figure could be much higher, as many accidents are covered up.
