South African President Thabo Mbeki paid an official visit to Vietnam on Thursday to build stronger economic and political ties.
It was Mbeki's first official visit to Hanoi, where he was to meet Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet to discuss political, economic and trade relations.
During his two-day visit, Mbeki was to lay a wreath at revolutionary hero Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, chat with Vietnamese students in Ho Chi Minh City and meet with Vietnamese and South African businesspeople.
He also was expected to meet legendary Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, 95, the military mastermind who used guerrilla warfare to defeat the French and later the Americans.
