Miners at the Shougang steel facility 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of Lima said the Chinese state-run firm has not met demands by the Peruvian government to introduce a pay increase.

"The strike is total, indefinite and carried out by more than 1,000 workers," Rey Fernandez, a trade union leader told AFP.

Shougang took over the mine in 1993.
