The 6.7-magnitude quake struck in the Pacific Ocean, some 325 kilometres southeast of the capital, according to the US Geological Survey. The Japanese weather agency did not issue a tsunami warning, however.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck central Japan earlier this week, killing one and injuring more than 120.

Around 20 per cent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike the country, which is located at the intersection of multiple tectonic plates.
